Baptism is a symbol of your new life as a Christian. We are saying goodbye to the 'old life' and we rise out of the water to walk in a 'new life' in Christ. Baptism is like a wedding ring; it is the outward symbol of the inward commitment you have made in your heart; a commitment that is lived out on a daily basis.
Jesus himself was baptised and he said that we should follow his example. So it is an act of obedience as well as a public declaration of our commitment and love for him.
As soon as a person decides to believe in Christ, they can be and are encouraged to be baptised. There are many reasons why we can feel like it’s not the right timing, but in the New Testament there was no delay! People were baptised the same day as choosing to follow Jesus.
As Jesus was baptised - by being immersed in water. The word ‘baptise’ means ‘to immerse or dip under water’. Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion under water. The book of Acts shows us that this was the norm for every believer.
